Xiaomi launches Loop LiquidCool technology for phones with twice the heat dissipation of traditional rooms

On Friday, November 5, Xiaomi announced a new technology called Loop LiquidCool that would provide efficient cooling of smartphone processors. The heat dissipation method introduced by the Chinese smartphone giant is said to separate the hot air and coolant flows, reducing thermal convention issues on mobile phones. Inspired by cooling systems used in aerospace technologies, Loop LiquidCool technology is a new version of the conventional steam chamber. It works on the basis of the capillary effect which attracts liquid coolants to the heat source, vaporizes, and then disperses the heat to a cooler area. The company plans to integrate Loop LiquidCool technology into its smartphones in the second half of 2022.

Xiaomi presented the new Loop LiquidCool technology via a blog post. The company says the new technology offers double the cooling capacities compared to conventional vapor chamber (VC) solutions. Loop LiquidCool technology includes an annular heat pipe system that includes an evaporator, condenser, filling chamber, gas and liquid pipes. When there is a heavy workload for the smartphone, the refrigerant in the evaporator evaporates into gas. The gas and air flow then diffuse to the condenser where the gas condenses further into liquid. These liquids are absorbed and collected through small fibers in the filling chamber, making it a self-contained system.

The new technology uses the same method as VC liquid cooling, Xiaomi explains. Even so, conventional VC systems do not have separate channels for gases and liquids. In Loop LiquidCool technology, the pump has a special gas pipe design which is supposed to reduce the resistance to air passage by 30% and increase the heat transfer capacity up to 100%.

With a Tesla valve microstructure, the one-way circulation would prevent heat from receding and increase the heat dissipation capacity of standard steam chambers.

Xiaomi also illustrated the new method on a custom Xiaomi MIX 4 by replacing the original vapor chamber with the new Loop LiquidCool Technology solution. The company claimed that during 30 minutes of Genshin Impact running at 60 frames per second (fps) and maximum graphics settings, the heating did not exceed 47.7 degrees Celsius and the processor was 8.6 degrees Celsius lower than the standard version. .
